Ritz-Carlton

Ritz-Carlton - In a city with so many small independent hotels, it’s practically a subversive gesture to stay in a Ritz-Carlton.
This hotel, though, like Montréal itself, is steeped in history—opened in 1912, the Ritz-Carlton has played host to everyone from Douglas Fairbanks to John Travolta.
The exterior may radiate old-world grandeur, but the interiors have seen a ten-million-dollar renovation. Anyone expecting trend-chasing minimalism, though, will
be in for a shock—though meticulously restored, the guest rooms are bursting with antiques, marble and gilt, looking for all the world like a period film set, with only the odd television
set or ethernet jack to spoil the illusion.
Rooms are large, despite the hotel’s age, and the comforts are legion, from marble fireplaces to palatial beds with 300-thread Egyptian cotton sheets. And the
public spaces are even more opulent, from the marble tiled floors and wood paneling of the lobby to the second-floor ballroom and the Jardin du Ritz, a manicured garden complete with
a fountain and a duck pond.
The Café de Paris serves exquisite French cuisine, with an extensive wine list, and any number of options lie just outside, whether for dining or shopping—Holt
Renfrew and Ogilvy’s department stores are nearby, as are all the designer shops of Ste. Catherine Street. Galleries and museums abound including the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Old
Port is a short taxi or metro ride away.

Auberge du Vieux-Port - Old Montréal is like a city within a city, a slice of Old Europe right in the
middle of a major North American city, where one can still hear the hooves of horses, drawing carriages along the meandering
cobbled streets. And the Auberge du Vieux-Port is a bit of a trip through time as well—though nominally a boutique, and
younger than it looks, the hotel is chock full of historical detail, with rustic touches like timbered ceilings and pine
floors and 1882-vintage stone and brick walls.
In the timbered cellar of the hotel is Les Remparts, the restaurant, a well-known and charming French favorite, featuring an unearthed relic from Montréal’s past—a
piece of the fortification that originally defended the city. Today the spot from which to survey the waterfront is in the Auberge’s guest rooms, fifteen of which face the Old Port, many
with whirlpool baths. All are immersive, comfortable, and are decorated in the same rustic romantic style as the restaurant and public rooms. The loft suites have kitchenettes, and are a
short walk from the hotel; some have wood-burning fireplaces.
It’s the best of two distinct hotel traditions—all the character and history of an authentic French country inn, and all the services (and space) of a modern
boutique. All the necessities are present, including wi-fi internet, and the rooftop terrace is a low-tech pleasure, offering panoramic views of the St. Lawrence river and the
surrounding Vieux-Port district.

Hotel Gault - In the historic quarter of Vieux Montréal, behind the 18th-century stone facade of a former carpet factory, you’ll find one of the most
modern hotels in North America. Hotel Gault has no time for the French country style of many of its neighbors—the look here is industrial contemporary, with
open-plan loft-style rooms, floors of polished concrete, and 1950s Eames chairs that look as futuristic today as they did when they first came off the
drafting table.
No two of the vast, airy rooms are alike, but all fit the fashion-forward minimalist mold, with a minimum of ornamentation; here the pleasures are in the
creature comforts, like the heated bathroom floors, the plush robes, and the café au lait delivered to your doorstep. Some have private terraces with vews of the scenic
neighborhood, others exposed red brick walls, and some come with vast California king beds—though the standard queens are nothing to be disappointed at.
Plasma-screen TVs look perfectly at home in these chic environs, and bathrooms are like something from a design magazine, with egg-shaped freestanding
tubs and low-profile washbasins.
Pretty, to be sure, but functional as well—high-speed internet connections are standard, as are generously sized work desks with chairs you’ll
want to take home. Room service is available round the clock, and business and conference facilities are available, as well as a well-equipped fitness
room. But if you’re lucky you’re just here for pleasure, and can afford to spend some time around the fireplace in the lounge.

Hotel Le Germain Montreal - In Montreal, the boutiques have all but run the big chains out of town—and Hôtel le Germain is the place that started it
all. Once a deeply unfashionable Sixties office block, this was the first hotel in town to embrace the sort of high-concept hotel design made famous by
Starck and Schrager in places like LA’s Mondrian or New York’s Paramount Hotel. This touched off something of a revolution in Montreal hotels, and the
cobbled streets of Vieux Montréal are heavy with chic little boutiques. Hôtel Le Germain, though, is in the city’s downtown business district, just off
Ste. Catherine Street, home to the finest designer shops and boutiques in town.
Le Germain’s interiors are minimal and fashion-forward, the rooms laid out loft-style, the old bank’s windows letting plenty of sunlight in. A subtle
Zen flavor predominates, as dark mahogany furniture stands out against backgrounds of whites and creams, and down duvets and Aveda bath products add
a measure of pampering. Glass-walled bathrooms are a staple of boutique boudoirs, but strike some as a bit tacky—here a subtle and tasteful window
offers a view from the bed, and can be shuttered in cases where modesty is called for. Breakfast is served in the mezzanine lounge, complete with newspapers in both
local languages, and the cappuccino bar is available around the clock. Le Prélude is the restaurant, serving European-influenced fare with a view
from the seventh floor. And the best part may be the decided lack of a scene; though this place has looks to spare, and plenty of atmosphere, there’s little
of the back-slapping cliquishness one would expect from a similar hotel in New York or LA.

The Hotel Nelligan is
named for Émile Nelligan, one of Quebec’s most
celebrated poets, and his face and quotations
adorn the interiors of the hotel. It’s a detail
that stops well short of outright gimmickry, but
it contributes to the sense of history that is
thick in the halls of this 1850 building.
It’s a boutique hotel, to be
sure, but the interiors are far from the
art-gallery sparseness that is the prevailing
boutique design trend. Instead the Nelligan is
heavy on function, with creature comforts ahead
of aesthetic shock, and rich brick, leather and
wood decor rather than white plaster or anything
Zen. It’s easy on the eye, to be sure, but
impossibly plush duvets and Frette bathrobes
target the subtler senses. Gas fireplaces,
spacious bathrooms, and the obligatory
high-speed internet round out the package of
conveniences, and as a bonus, many rooms have
private terraces overlooking the St. Lawrence.
The Old Montréal location is
convenient, and picturesque; it’s a historic
district, full of landmarks and preserved
buildings, yet also home to the city’s financial
district and any number of shops, cafés, and
restaurants. Verses, the hotel’s French
restaurant, is highly rated, and usually buzzing
with activity—and the rooftop terrace (in
summer) and the atrium bar (in colder months)
are perfect for a little relaxation with a
drink, a book of verse, or quite possibly both.

Tablet Hotel Group.

Hotel Place d’Armes
is a new addition to the historic
district of Old Montréal, a modern
boutique hotel within the renovated
nineteenth-century Great Scottish Life
Insurance building, and an ideal vantage
point from which to witness the
resurgence of this once-neglected
neighborhood.
Old Montréal was, quite obviously, the
first part of the city to be settled,
and throughout the twentieth century, as
today, the city’s financial and legal
giants towered over the district’s old,
meandering streets. It would be
reasonable to expect a hotel in Old
Montréal, esecially one housed in an
historic building, to be a conservative
or even stuffy affair; thankfully the
Hotel Place d’Armes is anything but
stuffy.
The experience is
state-of-the-art, owing mostly to the
sleek contemporary styling and an
intimate boutique atmosphere, but the
(plentiful) historical touches are key
to this hotel’s personality. Original
brick walls, period colors and woodwork,
and views of the charmingly historical
neighborhood stand side-by-side with
modern must-haves like Jacuzzis, Frette
sheets and high-speed internet
connections.
So though the Place
d’Armes is in one sense a boutique, it’s
pretty far from being Studio
54-on-the-St. Lawrence; class seems to
have been prized over flashiness. Thus
the lack of a deeply trendy discotheque,
though most guests won’t miss it. The
hotel does feature a restaurant, a
salon-style bar, a rooftop terrace, and
even a small exercise room, as well as a
conference center—a wider array of
services than many boutiques offer, to
be sure.

Tablet Hotel Group. |

Montréal has recently
seen a bumper crop of
new boutique hotels—few,
though, are as
self-consciously opulent
and relentlessly upscale
as Hotel Le St-James.
The building is, like so
many in Old Montréal, a
nineteenth-century
landmark, a Second
Empire bank building
dating to 1870, an
imposing and stately
structure, very much at
home amongst the
district’s
still-functioning banks
and office buildings.
The public rooms are
impressive, full of
restored period details,
like faux-Greek columns
and antique chandeliers
and candelabras. The
rooms are no less
ostentatious, decked out
in antique furnishings
and rich fabrics, though
such welcome
anachronisms as
flat-screen LCDs and
Bang & Olufsen sound
systems tend to dull the
illusion a bit. Pleasing
enough to the eye, the
rooms quite hold up to
the touch as well, with
Frette linens and Molton
Brown bath amenities.
The in-house
restaurant called Le XO,
is open for breakfast,
lunch, afternoon tea,
dinner and cocktails,
though the Grand Salon
is a perfectly, well,
grand setting,
for breakfast or
afternoon tea. There is
a small but complete
fitness center, and a
spa to rival any city
hotel. The Rolling
Stones (and their
massive touring
entourage) famously
booked the entire hotel
on the occasion of their
last visit—whether this
speaks to the exquisite
creature comforts or to
the hotel’s reputation
amongst jaded and
well-traveled
businessmen is left for
the reader to discern.

Le Saint Sulpice Hotel -
A few years ago we’d
have never believed that
Vieux Montréal would be
the epicenter of an
outbreak of chic and
modern boutique hotels,
but for whatever reason,
that’s what’s come to
pass; within the
historic district of the
walled old city, one
finds some of the most
inspiring small hotels
in North America.
Le
Saint-Sulpice is an
all-suite property, and
those suites are large,
beginning at 550 square
feet, many with
fireplaces, some with
terraces facing the
central courtyard
garden, a rarity in the
cobbled Old Town. Down
duvets and kitchenettes
are standard, as are
additional sofa beds and
leather armchairs. Plush
robes and Fruits et
Passion bath amenities
add to the creature
comforts, and work desks
and high-speed internet
access ensure a
productive stay.
Some stylish hotels
try hard to avoid
breaking a sweat
engaging in anything
resembling service, but
the Saint-Sulpice staff
seems cut from a more
old-fashioned cloth;
expect to be addressed
by name, and don’t be
shy about bothering the
concierge for a
recommendation.
Then again, don’t be
surprised if they direct
you to the in-house
restaurant; S Le
Restaurant serves
upscale French cuisine
from local Quebec
ingredients. And you
don’t have to dine in
every night; the
location, behind the
Notre-Dame Basilica, and
just a block from the
Old Port, means that any
number of excellent
restaurants, shops and
galleries are at your
feet.

The landmark Beaux-Arts exterior of the
ten-story St. Paul Hotel, in the heart
of the historic district of Vieux
Montréal, is utterly at odds with what’s
inside—an utterly modern and minimalist
hotel, something light and ethereal,
straight from the pages of a design
magazine. Stylish contemporary
furnishings decorate the lobby,
surrounding a fireplace of translucent
alabaster, an effect that must be seen
to be believed. And like many of the
converted buildings in Old Montreal, the
St. Paul benefits from sprawling spaces,
high ceilings and large picture windows.
Rooms are just as stunning as the lobby,
with traditional materials like polished
hardwoods, raw metal and exposed stone,
and clean, crisp modernist lines.
Windows expose the space to natural
light and make for panoramic views of
the old quarter, and the bathrooms feel
like little museums, with square marble
sinks and stylish fittings. Animal skins
drape over designer chairs, and closets
and desks are generous and functional.
High-speed internet is standard, and
the hotel’s meeting facilities are
suitable for a modest conference.
Leisure travelers, though, may get the
most out of the St. Paul; the Cube
restaurant is another impressive space,
serving an eclectic cuisine amidst
custom-designed tables and settings. The
Raw Bar is a suitably clubby
environment, the sort of place where
in-the-know locals mix with hotel
patrons, and the bars, restaurants and
shops of Vieux Montréal are just
outside.
