| Vancouver, the largest city in the province of British
Columbia, is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Canada. It is
surrounded on three sides by water - Burrard Inlet to the north, the Straight of
Georgia separating Vancouver from Vancouver Island to the west, and the north
arm of the Fraser River to the south. The view to the north is of the beautiful
coastal mountains. Vancouver is also one of the most visited cities in all
of Canada. Being a tourist can be
hard work. Where do you Stay? Where do you go? What do you see and do?
City Choices
has put it all together for you providing you with all the essential tourist
information you will need about Vancouver onto one convenient site. Whether
you're here for a month, a week, or just a short getaway, they will help
you plan the perfect stay. Click on the night skyline of Vancouver

Tourist
Information
The
Vancouver
Tourist Information Center is located at 200 Burrard St., Vancouver, B.C.
V6C 3L6 (tel. 604/683-2000). Here you will find all of the information you
need from booking accommodations to making suggestions for what to see and do.
When to
visit Vancouver
Trees such as the Western Red Cedar, of which there are plenty of
in the area, need a lot of rain. And, as Vancouver gets
about 47 inches a year, this makes the trees happy, but can make being a tourist sometimes
a bit wet. If you are planning a visit to this area, be sure to bring your umbrella
just as you would in Great Britain.
Most of this precipitation arrives in the
wintertime, when with a 30-minute drive to the mountains you can trade the rain
for snow. Skiing and snowboarding are popular from mid-December until the
mountain snow pack melts in June.
In mid-February, the winds slacken a bit and
there is more sun. I believe this may be one of the best times to visit.
Particularly as the
blossoms on the cherry trees begin to show and by the beginning of March it
seems every street is lined in pink. Probably from April to mid-October is
prime visiting time for tourists.
Vancouver enjoys moderately warm, sunny summers and mild, rainy winters. And,
being above the 49th parallel, you get more sun per summer day than you would
further south. There are 16 hours of daylight in mid-June, which means more
hours at the beach, shopping, or in the mountains than in other parts of North
America. Only 10% of the annual rainfall occurs during the summer months. The
average annual rainfall in Vancouver is 46 inches.

Science World and Omnimax Theatre
Located just minutes from downtown is a whole world of wonder. Hands-on,
interactive displays and the spectacular Omnimax films on one of the largest
dome screens anywhere, make this a great place for children. It is filled with
displays, exhibits and shows in the Science Theatre. The building was
constructed for Expo ’86 and served as the Expo Centre. During the world’s fair,
the pavilion housed the Futures Theatre. The film
A Freedom to Move was featured in the OMNIMAX Theatre. The Science World
‘golf ball’ is actually a geodesic dome, the design of which was created by
American inventor R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983). Fuller patented 28
inventions in his lifetime; perhaps the most famous is the geodesic dome which
was patented on June 29, 1954. One of the most famous geodesic domes in the
world was the American pavilion at Expo ’67 in Montreal. The original architect
for the Science World dome was Bruno Freschi; the architect for the additions
made to transform the Expo Centre into Science World was Boak Alexander.
In addition to the OMNIMAX Theatre and the Science Theatre, Science World is
home to five permanent galleries: the Eureka! Gallery, the Sara Stern Search
Gallery, the Kidspace Gallery, the Our World Gallery, and Illusions. It also
boasts a feature gallery for special exhibitions, a Centre Stage for live
science shows, a gift shop, Triple O's White Spot restaurant, and administration
offices. TELUS World of Science

Shopping In Vancouver
Asia West
Granville Island
Main Street
Punjabi Market
Robson Street
South Granville
Water Street
Robson Street
It's been said that the corner of Robson and Burrard gets more foot traffic than
any other corner in Canada. And, if you have ever been there on a busy shopping
afternoon, you would agree. It is a busy and colorful
parade of people, many of whom are from Asia. Perhaps that is why there
are so many sushi bars and
shops with Japanese signs. While you are here, look for high-end fashions,
with a focus on clothes for the younger set.
South Granville
The 10-block stretch of Granville Street from 6th Avenue up to 16th Avenue is where
many of the local citizens of Vancouver come to shop. Particularly some of the older
families with money! Classic and expensive men's and women's clothiers, and
house ware and furniture
boutiques predominate this area in the heart of Vancouver's gallery row.
Water Street
Though a little too heavy on the knickknack shops, and popular with tourists, Water Street and Gastown are by no means
tacky. Here you can find antique and cutting-edge furniture, galleries of art, and
interesting retro shops. Check it out.
Main Street
If you are into antiques, and lots of them, then Main Street from about
19th to 27th is the place for you. It is filled with antique shops.
However, to see it all you will have to visit a lot of shops as the stores all
seem to have picked out a particular niche of items, from art deco to
country kitchen to fine Second Empire. It's a fun place to browse, and if your
eyes start to glaze over at the thought of yet another divan, the area also has
cafes, bookshops, and clothing stores.
Granville Island
A rehabilitated industrial site beneath the Granville Street Bridge, the Public
Market is one of the best places to pick up salmon and other seafood you will
ever find. It's also a great place to browse for arts, crafts and gifts.
Everyone in the family will enjoy the Kid's Market, a kind of mini-mall for kids, complete with
Lilliputian entranceway, toy and book stores, and play areas and
services for the kids.
Asia West
This might just be the closest you will ever get to
Hong Kong or Asia. This new commercial area on Richmond's no. 3 Road between Capstan
and Alderbridge is like visiting the Orient. Stores in four new malls - the Yaohan
Centre, President Plaza, Aberdeen Centre, and Parker Place - cater to Vancouver's
newly arrived Asian community by bringing in goods direct from Asia. And, if you
don't like the prices, don't be afraid to barter a bit. You may be able to
save as much as 50 to 75 percent!
