Mountains, Boots &
Canoes
The Canadian Rockies are all about the great outdoors; stunning mountain
scenery, crystal clear lakes and raging rivers – not to mention glaciers and
snow-capped peaks. You’ll get straight out into the world-renowned Banff and
Jasper National Parks for some of the best hiking around including Lake Louise.
Getting into the woods on foot is by far the best way to explore the area and
there is a good chance of spotting some wildlife such as elk and moose, perhaps
even a glimpse of a grizzly bear. To really get into the wilderness you’ll then
embark on an overnight canoeing expedition – leave civilization behind and live
that true pioneer experience!
Whistler & Vancouver
Whistler is a great mountain base from which to try a number of different
activities. Hit the rapids for some adrenalin-fuelled white water rafting, head
for the hills on a mountain bike or saddle up and sample the scenic trails on
horseback, frontier style. The trip ends in the fascinating and cosmopolitan
city of Vancouver – an amazing contrast to the wilds of western Canada.
Responsible Travel
National parks have excellent environmental policies to protect their wonderful landscape. All camping is non-impact and all rubbish is recycled.

The Canadian High Arctic
We also offer several one-off departures to the Canadian High Arctic. Follow in the footsteps of famous explorers such as Sir John Franklin, William Baffin and Roald Amundsen as you explore the North West Passage. You’ll cruise through majestic fjords, travel to the foot of glaciers and crash through the ice as you keep your eyes peeled for whales, beluga, toothed narwhal and walruses not to mention Polar Bears. Ashore there are vast colonies of kittiwakes and little auks as well as small Inuit communities who survive these harsh latitudes with age-old experience. This part of the Arctic remains unspoilt and hidden from mass tourism.
Sea Kayaking Adventures
If you have experience of paddling and are up for a nautical adventure then let us know. We can take a number of ‘paddlers’ each voyage and it’s a great way to experience Antarctica or The Arctic at their most serene and tranquil.
Akademik Ioffe & Akademik Sergey Vavilov
These ships were built in Scandinavia by the Russian Academy of Science in 1988-89 for sensitive hydroacoustic ocean research. Designed to be exceptionally stable and quiet there is little if any engine noise. While not luxurious, the ships are working scientific vessels, they are comfortable clean and practical. There are ample outside viewing areas and an open bridge policy.
Some of the greatest and untouched wildernesses on Earth are only really approachable by ship. Using small ships with an expert crew and team of on board specialists is the essence of expedition cruises – voyages of discovery that could well turn out to be the holiday of a lifetime. Expert Team On all the ships you’ll have a full expedition/naturalist team on board to give talks on the wildlife, natural environment and history of the area. These experts will also accompany your onshore or water based expeditions in sturdy inflatable ‘zodiac’ boats which will typically take place twice a day. Please remember that as this is an expedition cruise, the exact program may well be varied to take advantage of good ice and weather conditions as well as the movements of wildlife.
Responsible Travel
We are confident that on these cruises the utmost care will be taken not to damage the environment in any way. You will be fully briefed on board about conservation issues.
Itinerary and Map
A Daily Program will be distributed each day, which outlines shore excursions, lectures, mealtimes and shipboard activities. Please note that factors like the weather and sea conditions mean that we cannot guarantee any specific excursion and all announced plans may be subject to change. However, such changes can often end up being the highlight of the trip and add an extra dimension of adventure. With this in mind, the itinerary described on this dossier should be regarded as an indication of what it is possible to see, rather than a guarantee of exactly what will be seen. The amount of time spent ashore will vary from trip to trip. The weather - and in particular the amount of sea ice - plays a large part in the decisions made. On most trips, shore or Zodiac excursions will be made one or two times a day.

To help you choose the right trip, The Adventure Company has graded every itinerary. Obviously, grading is quite subjective - what is demanding for some people may be easy for others, and vice versa - so please keep this in mind when choosing a trip. Most healthy, active people will be able to take part in and enjoy nearly every trip. Just click on the grade assigned to the tour you are interested in -- Gentle - Easy - Active - Moderate - Demanding - Strenuous.
|
Gentle
|
These trips are more about culture, landscapes and sights, rather than activity. There may be the odd walk on reasonably flat terrain, but be aware that walking city streets or clambering over ancient monuments can still be tiring. The itinerary could involve some tough traveling, so a sense of adventure is essential; you should be flexible, open-minded and prepared for the unexpected. Anyone in good health should be able to take part. |
|
Easy
|
This type of trip might have the odd half-day (say 2-4 hours) walk, or possibly longer. There will invariably be some ascent and descent but on generally easy gradients. Max. altitude 2000m. Suitable for anyone in good health and normal fitness. |
|
Active
|
Can involve activities like cycling, kayaking, walking, rafting, or even dog-sledding, for a half or full day. Suitable for anyone in good health and of normal fitness. No previous experience required, but you should undertake a program of exercise before the trip to get the most enjoyment out of each activity. |
|
Moderate
|
Harder half/full-day walks (3-6 hours) over rugged terrain and involving regular steep ascent and descent (max. 700m) and possibly with some minor obstacles. Max. altitude around 3000m. You will have to carry a daysac (up to 6kg). Requires reasonable physical condition. Previous experience or preparation beneficial. |
|
Demanding
|
Tough half day or full day-walks (up to 8 hrs) over rough paths, involving considerable ascent/descent (up to 1000m) on steep slopes with some minor obstacles or hazards. Max. altitude around 4000m. You will have to carry a large daysac or small rucksack (occasionally with a sleeping bag and personal gear up to 12kg). Good physical condition is essential. Some previous experience and/or preparation essential. |
|
Strenuous
|
Challenging, full-day walks of up to 12 hours, on very steep slopes in difficult terrain, with ascent/descent of over 1000m, at altitudes of over 4000m and/or in a rigorous climate. Many obstacles – some major. Scrambling may be involved. This also applies to treks of extended duration and any trek which is unsupported, i.e. where you must carry a rucksack with personal gear, food and equipment. Excellent physical condition and previous experience and appropriate preparation are essential. |
Note: technical skills, e.g. rope-work, using crampons or ice-axes, are not needed on any trip.
