Bangladesh
When people think of Bangladesh they often remember the bloody civil war of the early 1970s, the stories of hunger and famine,
and the fact that the area is very poor. And it is one of the poorest countries of the world. However, the Bangladesh Tourist
Bureau actively promotes tourism. Each year several hundred thousand visitors travel to Bangladesh with the primary destinations
within the country being the old Mughal capital at Dacca, the nearby Sonargaon with its ancient architecture, the
Buddhist cultural
center of Mainamati, and the popular beach resorts of Cox’s Bazar. This page will help you to discover how you can enjoy
these and other places of interest in Bangladesh. It is quite easy to get a visa for short visits and cholera and yellow fever
vaccinations are suggested and may even be required.

Bhutan
This landlocked country in the
Himalaya Mountains does not get a lot of tourist activity. However, since 1974 Bhutan has
opened its doors to tourists with some pretty strict entry regulations. Entry is through India and a passport and visa are required
along with some pretty strict health requirements including cholera inoculation. Tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis, and polio
immunizations are also recommended. The remoteness of the country and relatively limited transportation facilities restrict
the number of visitors to just a few thousand each year, many to climb the mountains. Some of the most interesting areas
for tourists to visit would include the beautiful Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha valleys with their many monasteries.

Brunei
Brunei is a small coastal state about 277 miles north of the equator in the northwest corner of
Borneo. It is bounded on all landward sides by
Malaysia
which actually divides Brunei into two
parts. Brunei’s population is mainly composed of Malays with a mixture of Chinese and Indian
communities. Expatriates and a few indigenous groups comprise a minority of the population.
The country is ruled according to established Islamic value and tradition by a monarchy.
Brunei's form of government is called a Malay Islamic Monarchy and one of the oldest in the
region with over 600 years of recorded history. To visit the main page for

Cambodia
Cambodia, or Kampuchea (as it is known by its own people) is a mainly lowland country bordering Thailand to the northwest,
Laos to the northeast, and Vietnam to the east and southeast. To the southwest it faces the Gulf of Thailand. If you could
use a color to describe a country, you would use the color green as it is filled with forested hillsides and valleys filled with rice
fields. It is a country rich in a history that dates almost 4,000 years. The pages on Cambodia will let you know how you can
enjoy visiting this country that boasts a very mild and tropical climate. To

China
China is the third-largest country in the world after the USSR and Canada. The country is divided into a lowland portion in the
east with mountains and plateaus in the west. China is a popular vacation destination and the restriction on tourism have been
eased to allow access by foreigners on group tours and even on an individual basis. While you still cannot travel around China
as you would Japan, hundreds of Chinese cities and scenic spots have been opened to foreign tourists. There are also several
resorts that are specifically designed for foreigners. Travel arrangements and visas are under the jurisdiction of the China Travel
and Tourism Administration and the China International Travel Service.
The Great Wall of China is the most popular tourist attraction,
but there are other very popular and interesting places to visit including
the Forbidden City
, or Imperial Palace, in
Beijing
; the
tombs of the
Ming emperors
; historic Hangzhou and the famous West Lake gardens there; Si’an, the site of the monumental
Ch’an Dynasty excavations; and the cities of Shanghai and Guangzhou. To visit

Hong Kong
Hong Kong, recently separated from the British as a crown colony, is one of the more popular tourist destinations in Asia.
Here on the
Kowloon Peninsula you can find a dazzling burst of color and light, people, and activity. Hong Kong is said by
many to be one of the most interesting cities in the world. One visit there and you will probably agree.

India
India – a land with a memorable past, a difficulty present, and a promising future – especially for tourists. This vast land has a lot
more to offer the casual visitor than the
Taj Mahal at
Agra
. There are the great and wonderful cities of
Calcutta
,
Bombay
, and
Madras; the monuments of the Jama Masjid Mosque in
Delhi
, the temple at Bodhagaya where the Buddha is said to have
achieved enlightenment, the sacred
Ganges River
, and the
Ajanta Temple Caves
; the numerous ancient temples and tombs
throughout the country; and, of course, the distinctive dance, theater cuisines, and festivals of India. These pages will help
you to enjoy all of that and more. To visit the main page for India, click

Indonesia
The islands of the
Indonesian Archipelago are
strung across the equator and is where you can find clear blue seas lap,
pristine beaches, and gentle breezes. Divers are entranced by
the ocean's riches. Inland, dramatic volcanic ranges tower above a green mantle
of terraced hillsides and lush rainforest.
Indonesia is filled with a rich history of kingdoms, conquests, trade and colonialism
and an interesting mix of
Muslim,
Hindu
,
Buddhist
and indigenous tribal culture
which has turned the area into one of interest to visitors. The archipelago's diversity and vast size can
may appear overwhelming at first glance, but an unhurried approach will reward you with
a little taste of paradise.

Japan
Tourism is a major industry of Japan with almost 2 million people visiting there annually. I love this country from the busy city streets
of
Tokyo to the historically significant ancient former capital of
Kyoto
. A search through the Japan pages of “Getting Away with
Jim Bruner” will convince you that this might should be your next vacation destination.

Laos
This small landlocked nation is still largely undeveloped. Laos is a land of towering mountains and dense tropical forests. You
could almost say that this country is isolated by the rugged mountainous interior of the
Indo-Chinese Peninsula. To say that this
tiny country does not encourage tourists would be an understatement. However, it can be done. Passports are required and
visas must be secured in advance. And, even then, your travel may be quite restricted within the country.

from the island of Taipa. There is a population of about 450,000 with 96% of the population
being Chinese and the rest Portuguese, European and from other

Myanmar
In 1989 Burma became the Union of Myanmar. As Myanmar has suffered a tremendous amount of internal strife it is not the
easiest or most comfortable country in Asian for a vacation. However, it has some wonderful sights and scenery and marvelous
people. Most of the country is covered with forest with only about 15% of the total land cultivated, mainly with rice. This page
will let you know how you can visit this mystical country. To visit the main

The ancient and mysterious kingdom of Nepal is isolated behind mountains so high they were once believed to be the “home
of the gods.” The scenic wonders of Nepal have attracted visitors for years. And it is one of the most popular areas of the world
for mountain climbing. If you want to climb a mountain in Nepal these pages will help you find out how you can do so.

North Korea
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, often called North Korea, occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in
East Asia. It is better endowed with forests and mineral wealth than South Korea. Travel and tourism is quite limited in North
Korea and visitors need visas secured in advance from DPRK diplomatic representatives.

Philippines
The Republic of the Philippines is a narrow network of islands in the
Pacific Ocean northeast of
Borneo and south of Taiwan.
It covers an area of over 115,000 square miles and consists of a little over 7,000 islands. The largest are
Luzon
in the north
and
Mindanao
in the South. About 500 of the islands in the Philippines have an area of about a square mile. The entire
coastline of the archipelago, along with its myriad bays and gulfs, is longer than that of the United States. Everywhere you look
you will find breathtaking views, towering mountains, mist-capped volcanoes, rolling valleys carpeted with coconut groves or
rice fields, jungles with bamboo and flowering plants, foaming waterfalls, and sparkling lakes. This is truly a vacation destination
you would always remember. Visitors must have a valid passport and a return or an “onward” ticket to visit. Shots for tetanus,
diphtheria, typhoid, yellow fever are recommended. To visit the main page

Singapore
Singapore is
a cultural pot pourri that leaves visitors almost overwhelmed by the
containment of so many influences upon one small island. This is one of those
places where grandor and provety live aside each other such as the grand, and expensive,
Raffles Hotel and the cheap, low-key food markets of Bugis Junction and
Clarke Quay. But even the "bad" parts are incredibly clean as nothing is allowed to dull the
shine of the city. There is even a ban on the chewing of lest someone spit their
gum on the ground. To visit the main page for Bhutan, click on Singapore.

South Korea
South Korea, or the
Republic of Korea, occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula and is a much more popular tourist
destination than its neighbor to the north. Major tourist attraction include the former royal capital of the Yi Dynasty, Kyongju and
its treasures of ancient Silla, the Korean Folk Village at Yongin, Cheju Island, several national parks, and
Seoul
– the “Soul of
Korea.” To visit the main page for South Korea, click on South Korea.

Taiwan
Taiwan, located about 100 miles off the coast of mainland China, is the largest of the 14 islands of the Taiwan group. You will
need a passport and a tourist visa to see the sights which might include the seat of government in Presidential Square, the many
museums, the National Palace Museum, Yangmingsham Park, and Langshan Temple in T’aipei; the Shihmen Dam Recreation
Area, Lake Tzuhu; the mausoleum of Chiang Kai-shek; the many temples and Dutch relics of T’ainan, Taiwan’s oldest city, and
Sun Moon Lake near T’aichung.

Thailand
Tourism has recently become a vital industry in Thailand. Much of this is due to the presence of so many American military
personnel during the Viet Nam War when so many of them visited Thailand on R&R. It is a beautiful country criss-crossed by
teak-covered mountains and fertile valleys. As with many Asian areas several immunizations are recommended, especially for
travel in rural areas, including typhoid, tetanus, and gamma globulin, and yellow fever inoculation is required of tourists arriving
from an infected area. Most visitors may stay for up to 15 days without a visa.

I have not been in Vietnam since 1967-68 when I was there courtesy of the United States Army during the Viet Nam
War (Books and Other Items for the Vietnam War).
However, I plan to get back one of these days. I do remember that it was a very beautiful country. Tourism is still pretty
restricted and you will need a visa to visit. Precautions against cholera and malaria are recommended.
