the People's Republic of China. Beijing has a continental climate with the rainy

Chengdu
Centrally located in the western Sichuan Plain, Chengdu, the
capital of Sichuan Province, is renowned for its fertile land and agricultural
wealth which have earned the city the nickname "Storehouse of Heaven." Also
named City of Brocade and City of Hibiscus, it comprises 5 districts, 12
counties with a total population of almost 9 million. Through the city flows the
Jinjiang river (river of brocade). In downtown area, long and wide avenues
flanked by high rise buildings and local shops and stores are dotted with
luxuriantly-grown green trees, and well-trimmed pretty flowers. Besides the
local teahouses, snack bars and bazaars (also known as free markets) are still
the popular places for tourists to frequent. One can either taste the typical
Sichuan cuisine, local wine and tea or sort out his shopping of local special
products like Shu embroidery pieces, bamboo- woven porcelain ware and lacquer
ware or familiarize himself with local folklores and customs.
Chongqing
Chongqing was originally the capital of the State of
Ba over three thousand years. The place was called Jiangzhou during the Western
Han Dynasty and then it was changed into Yuzhou during the Sui, Tang, Wudai and
Northern Song Dynasties. It was again renamed as Gongzhou for a short period of
time until it was given it's current name by Zhao Dun, the Prince Gong.
Chongqing is subtropical, hot in summer and this is probably why some refer to
it as the "furnace city." It is also known as a "mountain city" because of
its buildings on hillsides and mountains surrounding the city. The climate in
Chongqing is often cloudy and misty which gives it yet another name, "the fog
city."

nomads. Many aristocrats, men of letters, craftsmen thronged to the south,

Suzhou
In the lower reaches of the Yangtze
and on the shores of Lake Taihu lies the 2500-year-old city of Suzhou, the
cradle of Wu culture. The name "Wu" often applied to refer to Suzhou, derived
from the local tribes who named themselves "Gou Wu" in the late Shang Dynasty
about 11th century BC. Later, King Helu of Wu State in 514 BC built his capital
here known as the "Great City of Helu" and since then the city's site and scale
have remained virtually unchanged, making Suzhou a rare city of historical and
cultural renown in the world. Suzhou enjoys a mild and humid climate and is
easily accessible by water, land and air. The natural scenery of hills and
waters in Suzhou is as charming as a delicate beauty. Streets and alleys in
Suzhou extend side by side with canals. Small bridges and flowing waters, white
walls and dark grey roof tiles match one another in tranquil elegance. Endowed
with abundant native produce, the rich and exquisite Suzhou cuisine sets a style
of its own on this "land of plenty." The traditional performing arts of Suzhou
are best represented by the Kunqu Opera, Suzhou Opera and Ballad singing,
reputed both in China and overseas for their minute acting and harmonic melody.
As a major tourist city of wide reputation, Suzhou lives up to all the
expectations in food, hotel accommodations, transport, sight-seeing, shopping
and recreation.

Xi'an
Xi'an, the historical city, was called Chang'an in
ancient times, and is now the capital of Shaanxi province. Xi'an is situated in
the centre of Weihe Plain with the towering and verdant Mt.Qinling in the south,
with the meandering and rolling Beishan mountain system in the north and eight
rivers around it, all of which are at Guang Zhong Plain (the centre of passes).
It became the oriental cultural centre of the Silk Road. Many dynasties kept the
city beautiful and magnificent. More than two hundred and seventy palaces and
temples, for example, were built in the Qin dynasty, in the Han dynasty the
"Three Han Palaces," namely Changle, Weiyang, Jianzhang Palaces, and numerous
other palaces and watch towers were built. Now, from these architectural sites
people still can imagine the general picture of what Chang'an City was like,
then. Aside from being a major tourist destination and historical city,
today Xi'an is an important industrial and manufacturing center. Despite the
incredible history that Xi'an carries, it is a modern and prosperous area. The
nightlife here is pretty up to date and Xian's University is considered to be
one of the best in China. As a result, the city has a large student population
who contribute to the cultural life of the city, making Xi'an one of the most
pleasant cities in China and an ideal place to break the journey between Beijing
and Shanghai.
