Mekong, Luang Prabang & Vientiane
Boarding a riverboat you journey along the Mekong River, pausing to explore the remarkable Pak Ou Caves. Arriving in Luang Prabang you’ll discover temples and palaces adorned with golden spires and walk in the surrounding countryside to a hilltribe village. You’ll stay the night in the village before moving on to explore Vientiane - the quiet capital of Laos.

Cambodia & Angkor Wat
Flying into Phnom Penh, there’s plenty of time to see the main sights including the Royal Palace and celebrated National Museum. Of course the climax of your trip is a comprehensive visit to the atmospheric temples, giant carved faces and intricate towers of Angkor Wat – one of the world’s greatest ancient wonders.

Hilltribe Encounter
Laos has many ethnic groups; those that farm the hills and mountainsides are commonly referred to as hilltribes. These fascinating villagers have differing beliefs, languages, methods of farming and dress, making each unique. To gain an insight into their lives you’ll hike to their villages and stay in a village house, usually a highlight of the trip.

Responsible Travel
Working with a local agent ensures our money is distributed to a wide range of people from guides and drivers, to small hoteliers and restaurateurs. In turn, they support initiatives such as an orphanage in Chiang Mai. Our visit encourages local people to preserve their culture (especially important for hilltribe villagers) and contributes to the upkeep of historical and natural sites, i.e. Angkor Wat and the Dong Hua Sao National Biodiversity Conservation Area. In addition, there is also the opportunity to have lunch at a restaurant run by street children and visit the Apsara Foundation, whose aim is to educate poor Cambodian children to become professional dancers and musicians, and simultaneously conserve Cambodian arts and culture.

Countryside & Coast
After exploring the main historical and cultural highlights of Cambodia's pleasant capital city Phnom Penh, including the sobering Killing Fields, you’ll head out into the countryside. En route to tiny Takeo where you’ll be the guests of local villagers, you’ll see a number of shrines, including the mountain top temple of Phnom Chisor. From here the southern coastal resort of Sihanoukville beckons, where there’ll be free time to relax or snorkel (optional) after taking a private boat trip to Koh Tansey (Rabbit Island) and discovering the waterfalls and hill station of Bokor.

Temples & Angkor Wat
Heading back to the north of Cambodia to Kompong Cham, you’ll pause to visit the temples of Wat Nokor, Phnom Pros and Srey, before continuing to the charming riverside city of Kratie to spot dolphins. We’ve included a stop at Kompong Thom and a sunset temple visit en route to what will surely be the highlight of your holiday in Cambodia – three days exploring the magnificent complex of ancient temples at Angkor Wat.

Dolphin spotting
You will get the chance to spot very rare Irrawaddy dolphin. These freshwater dolphins live in a particular stretch of the Mekong River, just north of the sleepy town of Kratie. In the dry season when water levels in the river drop, the dolphins reside in a series of deep water pools which makes them easier to find. The best times of year to see dolphins are between January and August.

Responsible Travel
We donate $5 per person to the Land Mine Museum in Siem Reap, which helps to raise local awareness of mine dangers. You can also visit the Amelio School for Disadvantaged Children and take gifts.

To help you choose the right trip, The Adventure Company has graded every itinerary. Obviously, grading is quite subjective - what is demanding for some people may be easy for others, and vice versa - so please keep this in mind when choosing a trip. Most healthy, active people will be able to take part in and enjoy nearly every trip. Just click on the grade assigned to the tour you are interested in -- Gentle - Easy - Active - Moderate - Demanding - Strenuous.

Gentle

These trips are more about culture, landscapes and sights, rather than activity. There may be the odd walk on reasonably flat terrain, but be aware that walking city streets or clambering over ancient monuments can still be tiring. The itinerary could involve some tough traveling, so a sense of adventure is essential; you should be flexible, open-minded and prepared for the unexpected. Anyone in good health should be able to take part.

Easy

This type of trip might have the odd half-day (say 2-4 hours) walk, or possibly longer. There will invariably be some ascent and descent but on generally easy gradients. Max. altitude 2000m. Suitable for anyone in good health and normal fitness.

Active

Can involve activities like cycling, kayaking, walking, rafting, or even dog-sledding, for a half or full day. Suitable for anyone in good health and of normal fitness. No previous experience required, but you should undertake a program of exercise before the trip to get the most enjoyment out of each activity.

Moderate

Harder half/full-day walks (3-6 hours) over rugged terrain and involving regular steep ascent and descent (max. 700m) and possibly with some minor obstacles. Max. altitude around 3000m. You will have to carry a daysac (up to 6kg). Requires reasonable physical condition. Previous experience or preparation beneficial.

Demanding

Tough half day or full day-walks (up to 8 hrs) over rough paths, involving considerable ascent/descent (up to 1000m) on steep slopes with some minor obstacles or hazards. Max. altitude around 4000m. You will have to carry a large daysac or small rucksack (occasionally with a sleeping bag and personal gear up to 12kg). Good physical condition is essential. Some previous experience and/or preparation essential.

Strenuous

Challenging, full-day walks of up to 12 hours, on very steep slopes in difficult terrain, with ascent/descent of over 1000m, at altitudes of over 4000m and/or in a rigorous climate. Many obstacles – some major. Scrambling may be involved. This also applies to treks of extended duration and any trek which is unsupported, i.e. where you must carry a rucksack with personal gear, food and equipment. Excellent physical condition and previous experience and appropriate preparation are essential.

Note: technical skills, e.g. rope-work, using crampons or ice-axes, are not needed on any trip.
