By Train
The railway system is South Africa is well established and most of it is privately operated. All the major towns are connected. There is train service (Metro) in and around several cities.

For sheer luxury you should try The Blue Train which runs between Pretoria and Cape Town. Many people come to South Africa just for the experience. And, if you find the complete trip is out of your budget, make a day trip by traveling along a section of it. As the train is quite popular, bookings are suggested well in advance. 

Steam train tours, including the "Apple Express" from Port Elizabeth, the "Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe between Knysna and George, the "Banana Express" along KwaZulu Natal South Coast, and "Magaliesberg Express" from Johannesburg to Magaliesberg also make for very interesting ways to see the countryside.

By Private Vehicle
Generally, road conditions is South Africa are quite good. You will find plenty of gas (petrol) stations that are often open 24 hours and fuel is relatively cheap. A valid national license is accepted provided it carries your photograph otherwise an International Driving License is recommended. Driving is on the left hand side.

The major companies, such as Avis and Budget are represented, and, although their rates are pretty high, there is an advantage of using them is that you can often book through an agent in your home country (or on-line). This can often be cheaper than booking upon arrival in South Africa.
