Tangier

Your travel source with a personal touch!

For most people their first visit, and perhaps only visit, to Morocco is to the coastal city of Tangier which can be reached on a day-trip from Spain. Hydrofoil services to Tangier from Algeciras, Tarifa, and Gibraltar make it very easy to get to. When Pat and I visited there we took the hydrofoil from Algeciras to Ceuta, and then traveled from Ceuta to Tangier by coach. I would suggest that you take a guided tour for this day-trip as you will feel, and probably be, a lot safer.

The markets of Morocco have to be some of the more interesting in the world! It is so much fun just to wander through the markets seeing all of the goods on display and watching all of the people. Here my wife Pat and I are on our way to an interesting little restaurant that was located within this marketplace. Be sure to visit one of the markets when you are in Morocco, but, just to be on the safe side, do it with a guide.

And, if you should become separated from your guide while strolling through one of the marketplaces, here is a tip to help you find your way out of the maze of small streets and passageways.  Look at the cobblestones on which you are walking.  You will see an arrangement of stones with either two or three rows of stones right down the middle of the walkway.  If you follow a walkway with two rows of stones, you will never get out and will probably end up in a dead end or something.  However, if you follow a walkway with three rows, this will lead you out of the marketplace!

Although it is located on the African continent, Ceuta is actually a part of Spain. We met our Arab tour guide when we got off of the boat in Ceuta and went immediately to our waiting coach. The only rather unnerving thing was giving up our passports for a little slip of paper authorizing us to be in Morocco for the day.

Traveling though the border crossing and into Morocco was really like going to another world. Things were very different and you could tell that this was one of the more poor countries of the area. The coach traveled along a good highway with the desert to our south and the mountains to our north. Along the way the guide had the coach stop so we could all have our turn riding a camel. Now this may be just a bit “touristy,” but then, you are on vacation, after all, so you should try to do it all. You know, “Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt!”

Morocco is a place I would encourage you to visit if you should ever have the opportunity. In Morocco you enter a world of mosques, camels, snake charmers, and bustling markets. Although we were only there for the day, we were able to see all of these as well as enjoy a wonderful lunch in a Moroccan restaurant. We enjoyed a lunch that began with an appetizer of harira, a thick, creamy, and spicy soup served with the traditional flat bread, khobz; brochettes, cubes of lamb on kebabs cooked over an open hearth; cous-cous, a huge bowl delicious steamed semolina grains with vegetables and chicken; and finished our meal with fresh fruits including grapes, melons, oranges, bananas, and dates. After lunch we went into the market area where we could shop for souvenirs, spices, watch the snake charmers, and really soak up the wonderful ambiance of this Tangier.
