Getting There on the Road
You can get to Ethiopia from Djibouti by road, but it's pretty exhausting.
Actually, a
bus-train combination will be much better and easier. You can find buses that run between Addis Ababa and
Nairobi, but the trip can be slow as you often have to wait for a convoy to
assemble, as it is almost always necessary to travel in convoy through the more dangerous areas.
Getting Around in Ethiopia
Ethiopian Airlines has a strong internal network and prices are
pretty reasonable. There's also a good network of very cheap (and also very
slow) buses on most of the
major roads. In the bigger towns, you need to buy your ticket a day beforehand
or you'll have to pay double to the scalpers who buy up all available seats. The
only train line runs between Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. Be forewarned that the
trip will be long, slow,
and pretty dull.
