Getting To
The Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has two
international airports. Las Americas International
Airport is located in Santo Domingo. La Union
International Airport is located about 23 miles east of Puerto Plata. Las Americas can be
confusing and chaotic. Visitors are often required to undergo a very thorough
customs check. As these customs officals are often overworked and underpaid,
they can sometimes be pretty
sharp with visitors. Your best bet is to keep your cool and
continue to be polite. Being rude can only make the process more difficult.
Be wary of letting anyone handle your bags, since thieves frequently pose as
porters. Take care of your luggage yourself. Be sure to keep valuables in carry-on luggage, not your checked bags
as stolen
luggage is not uncommon. For these reasons most Caribbean traffic passes through
La Union which, though farther from tourist destinations, makes for an easier
arrival and departure.

Cities and Towns in the Dominican Republic
La Romana
This is the third-largest city in the Dominican Republic. The city is capital of the southeastern province of La Romana, opposite Catalina Island.
The biggest industry here is tourism as
La Romana is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, because of its beautiful beaches and many hotels and resorts. There are also many growing suburban areas and fenced communities.
Punta Cana
Punta Cana is
part of the newly created Punta Cana-Bavaro-Veron-Macao municipal district in La
Altagracia. The area is best known for its beaches and has been a popular
tourist destination since the 1970s. To the north, it borders the village and
beach of Cabeza de Toro, and then the Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. The
nearest city is 45 kilometres away, and it takes about an hour to drive there.
Punta Cana-Bavaro's resorts show a eclectic variety of architecture and interior
design inspired by Spanish, Mexican, and native Dominican cultures.
The 62 milr coastline tends to be mildly windy. The ocean waters are mainly shallows, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe without any danger. Bávaro is an area starting from Cabeza de Toro until Macao Beach. As the hotels started to rise along the East coast, Bavaro itself became a center of services with shopping malls, fast-food stores, drug stores, fine restaurants, banks, clinics, workshops, supermarkets, and schools.
Punta Cana has 12 golf courses all within one hour drive from each other. The nightlife inside the resorts is very lively with Las Vegas-style shows. Outside of the hotels, half a dozen high-quality discothèques allow tourists to interact with local residents. There are 80+ restaurants and bars, with exotic international cuisine from China, India or Thailand can be visited when on a night out. Other tourist attractions include Manatí Park (a waterpark), Puntacana Shopping Village, the Cap Cana 500+ slip marina, Palma Real Shopping Village (one mile long, with well-known retailers such as Hard Rock Cafe-Punta Cana, Tony Roma?s, Tommy Hilfiger stores and Puma. Theatres, local discos like Montecristo, MovieMax?s store are some of the entertainment facilities. Visitors to the Punta Cana-Bavaro County will love to visit the Basilica Catholic Monument, built in 1962 designed by two French Architects, in Higuey, the 500-year-old capital of the Province.
Santiago
Just off the pulsating stretch of the Baga main road, one is transported to the palm-treed sanctuary of Santiago . Its cozy charm and superb location are a large part of its enduring appeal. Bamboo Bistro by the poolside offers varied snacks, mini meals and beverages through the day. At night Las Masalas serves an intriguing combination of Spanish, Continental, Mediterranean and Indian dishes. A2Btransfers offers taxi transfers in Santiago. If you have information you believe I should add to this section of Getting Away, please contact me. mailto:jimbruner@gettingaway.co
