The People of St. Lucia
The island's people and its culture evolved from the influences of several highly interesting and contrasting groups of people. As you walk along the street you can smell the aroma of fine Indian food, enjoy the British speech and manners of the islanders, and enjoy the wonderful Caribbean music. This diversity draws tourists from all over the world.

The islanders of St. Lucia are very proud of their cuisine. The island produces wonderful produce. This is because the soil of St. Lucia is rich and fertile due to past volcanic activity. You will also enjoy the local bananas, mangoes, pineapples, and many other tropical fruits that grow on the island. The seafood here is wonderful cooked and seasoned with a nice blend Indian spices and Creole methods of cooking.

Passports, Visas and Entry Requirements

All visitors to St. Lucia, including U.S.* and Canadian citizens, as well as those from within the Caribbean, must have a valid passport and an ongoing or return ticket, regardless of their country of origin.

*The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. This includes United States citizens! In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future. For additional information, go to http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html.

Health and Safety
Although the water here is consider to be safe to drink, I would still suggest you stick to bottled water.

St. Lucia has about as much crime as major metropolitan areas like London or New York. Just as you would there, it is important to use common sense while you are here. Don't carry large amounts of cash on your person, and don't leave valuables unattended, and keep your expensive jewelry at home.

Geography
The interior of St. Lucia is beautifully forested with mountain peaks that range from 1,000 to over 3.000 feet. These mountainsides are covered with tropical forests. As you get closer to the shoreline, you will find that the land becomes quite flat. The southwest coast is famous for the volcanoes of Gros Piton and Petit Piton. Visitors to St. Lucia can experience unique geographical adventures such as driving into a volcano or taking a dip in the Sulphur Springs. The capital city of Castries lies in the northwestern portion of the island.

Climate
The temperatures here are pleasantly moderate due to trade winds, with January averages ranging from 76 to 82, and July averages ranging from 80 to 85. This Caribbean island experiences about 75 inches of rainfall annually.

Currency
The official currency of St. Lucia is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$). The U.S. dollar is widely accepted, but you may still receive change in EC$. The exchange rate is permanently fixed at about EC$2.70 to each US$1 (EC$1 = US$.37).

Currency Exchange - Get your currency needs managed in advance! Many airports, railroad stations, bus depots, and other points of entry have no currency exchange. When currency exchange is available in airports, lines can be long and rates can be "sky high". These long waits and usurious fees can be a nightmare.  Order in advance from All Foreign Currency right online. It's fast, easy, and you save time and money! The can also provide you with Travelers' checks, bank drafts, and transfers. U.S. dollars are not accepted everywhere and rates can be atrocious!

Electricity
Everyone who comes to St. Lucia from the United States will want to bring their adapters and converters as
St. Lucia uses a 220- or 230-volt system.

Getting To and Around St. Lucia
Typically, Caribbean travelers arrive via air at George F. L. Charles Airport in Castries, but they may also arrive at the larger Hewanorra International Airport near the city of Vieux Fort. Direct flights from the U.S. and Canada to both airports are available. Flights generally connect through San Juan if they originate outside the U.S. Visitors to the northern portion of the island are generally advised to arrive via George F. L. Charles Airport since taxi rides from Hewanorra International Airport can be lengthy and expensive. Visitors to the south are advised to arrive at Hewanorra International Airport. Taxis are available at both airports.
