General
Information For St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Kitts and Nevis (sister islands)
seem to be one of those places that has been lost in time. This pair of volcanic
islands are quaint, quiet, verdant, and natural. The two islands are separated by a
mere two-mile stretch of the Caribbean sea. Both of the islands have historical and
natural sites for visitors to enjoy. Recently, the two islands have been
competing with each other to win Caribbean tourists, making them excellent
islands to visit as they try to outdo one another. For more information, visit

The People of St. Kitts and
Nevis
The main occupation of the peoples of these islands is agriculture. However, tourism still plays the major role in their economy.
The people here are of a quiet nature and many visitors enjoy coming here
because of the relaxed nature
and British manner of the islanders. Many of the tourists to St. Kitts and Nevis are typically regulars who
spend weeks with much of that time spent mixing with the islanders on the islands' many beaches.
Entry Requirements
Citizens of the United States* and Canada need an original birth certificate
(with raised seal) and a government-issued photo ID for identification upon
entering St. Kitts and Nevis. It is better if you have a passport. Visitors from all other countries,
including those of the Caribbean, need a valid passport.
| *The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism
Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and
from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or
other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. This
includes United States citizens! In order to facilitate the
implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to
complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published
in the Federal Register in the near future. For additional information, go

Climate and Weather
The temperatures
here don't vary much with January averaging a low of 71 and a high of
79, and July averaging a low of 77 and a high of 85.
The dry season runs from November through April, with the rainy season from May
through October. The islands experience about 51 inches of rainfall annually.
Geography
Of the two islands, St. Kitts is the larger with its highest point being Mt. Liamuiga,
that is about 3,000 feet above sea level. Nevis is
encircled by coral reefs with Nevis Peak dominating most of the island at a height of
3,232 feet above sea level. The Narrows, a two mile channel, separates the two
Caribbean islands.
Heath and Safety
The water on the islands is among the purest in the Caribbean, making it very
safe to drink and one of the few places you probably do not need to bother about
bottled water. You will want to be sure to try Cane Sugar Rothschild. It is a
very pure
sugar cane liqueur that is brewed exclusively with water from the islands.
St. Kitts and Nevis experience a low crime rate.
This may be in part because they are
not a major tourist destination. Most of the crime here takes the form of stolen
belongings that were left unattended on beaches, in cars, and in unlocked hotel
rooms. If you use care, and keep a close eye on valuables, you should not have
any problems. Never leave valuable items
exposed in rental cars, and remember to lock your hotel room. Women
should not go out alone along deserted roads, as they are more likely to be
robbed.
Currency
The official currency of St. Kitts and Nevis is the
Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$). The U.S. dollar is widely accepted, but you
may still receive change in EC$. The exchange rate is permanently fixed at
about EC$2.70 to each US$1 (EC$1 = US$0.37).
Currency
Exchange - Get your currency needs managed in advance! Many airports,
railroad stations, bus depots, and other points of entry have no currency
exchange. When currency exchange is available in airports, lines can be long and
rates can be "sky high". These long waits and usurious fees can be a
nightmare. Order in advance from
All
Foreign Currency right online. It's fast, easy, and you save time and
money! The can also provide you with Travelers' checks, bank drafts, and
transfers. U.S. dollars are not accepted everywhere and rates can be atrocious!
Electricity
U.S. and Canadian visitors will want to be sure to bring adapters and converts
for their appliances as St. Kitts and Nevis use the 220-volt system.
Getting To and Around St. Kitts and Nevis
Most of the visitors to these islands arrive on Nevis through Newcastle Airport, or on St.
Kitts through Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport. Direct flights from the
U.S. and Canada to either airport are not usually available and you will
probably need to connect through San Juan, Puerto Rico. Connections can also be
made from other major
Caribbean airports. Travelers can land at either airport and take the ferry
between the two islands.
Taxis wait outside both airports and hotels. You will want to
be sure to ask about the
price and the currency before you get in. The fare from Newcastle Airport to
Charlestown is approximately $15(USD). The fare from this airport to Pinney's
Beach is $8(USD). The fare from Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport to
Basseterre is approximately $8(USD); fares are higher to Frigate Bay.
