General Information On the Cayman Islands

Although the Cayman Islands are home to two big off shore businesses, banking and diving, it is also one of the more popular vacation and holiday areas of the Caribbean. Some of the best shopping is in the capital city of George Town on Grand Cayman Island. If it is water sports you seek, along the coasts and smaller islands you can enjoy boating, diving, and sun-bathing in a relaxing environment that is hard to find in some of the rest of the Caribbean. For more detailed information about the Islands, see The Cayman Islands Online and the CIA World Factbook.

Passports, Visas and Entry Requirements

Passports and Visas
Visitors are advised to carry a passport here just as you would when visiting any other foreign destination. Citizens of the U.S.* and Canada need only a birth certificate with a raised seal and a photo ID. All other visitors, including those from the Caribbean, must have a passport. And all visitors, regardless of country of origin, will need a return or ongoing ticket.

*The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. This includes United States citizens! In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future. For additional information, go to http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html.

Passport Visa Express specializes in obtaining Passports for United States Citizens who wish to travel internationally within the next 30 days. We work directly with the U.S. Passport Agency assisting you in expediting your passport application in as fast as the same day! Our passport consultants have many years of direct experience working with the Passport Agency.

The People of the Cayman Islands
The capital of the Cayman Islands is home to bankers, retirees, and tourists. The general attitude of the Cayman Islands is relaxed and friendly. You will not find this to be the place to come for a fast-paced, thrill-seeking vacation. Cayman life focuses on the seas, with boating and diving being two of the most popular activities. The Meticulous manners of most of the islanders comes from their  British colonial days.

Health and Safety
The Cayman Islands are some of the safest destinations in the Caribbean. This may be why it has a very strong tourism-driven economy. Theft is not widespread, but observing caution never hurts. As always, be careful when you are out and, when you leave your hotel, be sure to safeguard your valuables.

Geography
There are three islands in the Caymans. The largest, Grand Cayman Island, is 22 miles long and 8 miles across at its widest point. The other two islands, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, are considerably smaller and less developed. Just seven miles of water separates these two smaller islands. The Caymans' underwater terrain makes it one of the most popular diving locations in the Caribbean.

Currency
The official currency of the Caymans is the Cayman Islands Dollar, which is fixed to the U.S. Dollar at a rate of $1(CI) to $1.25(USD).

Currency Exchange - Get your currency needs managed in advance! Many airports, railroad stations, bus depots, and other points of entry have no currency exchange. When currency exchange is available in airports, lines can be long and rates can be "sky high". These long waits and usurious fees can be a nightmare.  Order in advance from All Foreign Currency right online. It's fast, easy, and you save time and money! The can also provide you with Travelers' checks, bank drafts, and transfers. U.S. dollars are not accepted everywhere and rates can be atrocious!

Weather and Climate
One of the main reasons tourists keep coming back to the Caymans is that the temperatures are almost always pleasant with fairly even temperatures throughout the year. In January, temperatures range from 73 to 81; in July, norms range from 80 to 88. The rainy season is normally from May to November, and annual rainfall is about 46 inches. Don't be afraid to visit during the rainy season, though as, unlike the sustained afternoon thunderstorms of Miami and other tropical locations, the Cayman rain showers are normally short and sporadic fun.

Electricity
The Cayman Islands use a 110-volt electrical system, so U.S. and Canadian visitors will not need adapters. However, European visitors might want to bring them with them.

Getting To and Around the Caymans
Most visitors to the Caymans from the United States arrive by air via Miami, Houston, or Atlanta. The major airport, Owen Roberts International Airport, is located on Grand Cayman Island. Owen Roberts services Air Canada, Air Jamaica, American Airlines Cargo, American Trans Air, British Airways, Cayman Airways, Continental, Cubana, Delta Airlines, Islena Airlines, Maya Island Air, Northwest Airlines, Rollins Air, US Airways, and United Airlines, along with other smaller airlines.
