How to Contact Jim and Getting Away

Here I am on the Isle of Capri in Italy. This is one of my favorite places and, if you visit there, I'm sure it will become one of your favorites also.

I have been traveling for about 40 years and during that time I have found you can have a much better time, and often save money, if you are well prepared. When I first began using the Internet to find travel information I often had trouble finding the information I needed. I knew the information was "somewhere out there in cyber space," but I somehow could not locate it. It was then I decided to develop a travel site where you could find out just about everything you wanted to know about traveling.

Although I have been traveling for many years, and should know just about everything there is to know about how to travel, I still mess things up sometimes.

For instance, in this picture you can see me in the market place in Kusadasi, Turkey finding out I have run out of film.

So, who is Jim?  Someone just like you who enjoys travel and likes to share his travel experiences with others.

I was born in Flint, Michigan and grew up in Michigan and California. Along with those states I have lived in Illinois, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia where I currently reside. I live just west of Atlanta in the small town of Douglasville. When I returned from Vietnam, I went to work for Kmart working first as an assistant manager in several stores, and then working as assistant to the Vice President of Sales and Marketing in Troy, Michigan. After that, I went back out into the field to manage stores in Michigan, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. When asked to relocate again to Mississippi (I had already lived in 9 locations in 4 states in 13 years.), I opted to leave the company.

From there, I first sold real estate in the Atlanta area before becoming vice president for a home building company. About a year after that, I started my own design/build corporation where I designed and built homes in the Atlanta area. After I had had enough of the headaches of building, and needing a change, I went to work as a high school teacher in Douglasville, Georgia where I taught Engineering Drawing and Design, Architectural Drawing and Design, and Television Broadcasting and Video Production.

I retired from the school system in 2003 and my wife and I moved to Rio Rico in December of 2004. We brought her parents with us to Arizona and we live in houses next door to each other.

My wife Pat and I have been married for over 40 years and have enjoyed all of our travels together. I have traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, the Mediterranean, parts of the East and the Pacific. I used to have a travel newsletter, was the host of a traveling call-in/talk radio show (Getting Away With Jim Bruner) on WSB AM 750 in Atlanta.  Additionally, I have written many travel articles. In 1999, I designed the Getting Away With Jim Bruner (www.gettingaway.com) travel website that is filled with general travel information, world-wide destination information, and provides visitors to the site to purchase travel on line. I have also led tours for over 15 years throughout Europe and the United States. I am a travel agent and, along with the website, I sell airfare, cruises, tours, rental cars and other related travel items.

Who runs the site?
I do!  There is no company or corporation behind the site.  It's just me, my time, and my money!  I guess you could say it is a hobby and a labor or love.  And, as it does cost money to keep the site running, it is really appreciated when you visit my sponsors.

I also get a lot of help from my son-in-law on putting things together as he is much better on the computer than I.  He has his own computer company and I highly recommend him if you are looking for anything in the computer area.  He does a lot of work with school systems and also sells and services a great program for library automation software and media management for libraries.  To find out more just click on Precision Computer Service Inc. or Surpass.

Although I get technical help from my son-in-law the site content is mine.  And, most of what you read on Getting Away comes from personal experiences I have had while traveling, or from others who have sent me information about their travels.  You can be a bit part of Getting Away by sending me your favorite travel "stuff."  I am always looking for interesting things to see and do (Anywhere in the world - If I don't have a page on the location you send, I'll make one!), good overnights, places for good food, and anything else you have.  I also am always on the lookout for great travel links.  Some of the best things on Getting Away With Jim Bruner have come from the  submissions of folks like you!

Want to see Europe but, don't want to do it on your own? See London, France and Italy in 2005 with Jim. Tour group is limited to 30 persons. Click Here for the 2005 Tour!

What are site sponsors?
I pay for this site out of my pocket, so to help pay for the site, I have added links to various sponsors and advertisers.  Usually they pay a few pennies for each user that clicks from my site to theirs.  So if you enjoy this site, you can help me pay for keeping this site just by visiting some of the sponsor sites on occasion.  I have hand-picked many sponsors that relate to the travel industry, so you'll also find that you get some great information from them!  Additionally, you will find places where you can shop online for just about everything.  To find my sponsors page just click on Discounts and Deals!

And, whenever you plan to purchase books online, please purchase them from Amazon through Getting Away.  It will really be appreciated and will help me continue to make Getting Away With Jim Bruner one of the best, and most interesting, travel sites on the Internet.

General Information About Getting Away
This site is for all travelers from all over the world. However, as I am an American I have geared the site for individuals living in the United States. However anyone living outside of the United States will find a lot of very good information as there is extensive information on countries all over the world, and a very large section on the United States.

First-time travelers will find all of the information they will need to have a very nice trip. And, if you are a first-time traveler outside of the United States, you will find everything you need to know about passports and visas.

This is also an interesting site for the experienced traveler. Those who travel often will find information and links that can help make their next getaway great. Additionally, frequent travelers can make excellent additions to this site as I want it to be an "interactive" site.

Your input, whether you are a first-timer or travel regularly, will help me make this site one of the most interesting and informative travel sites on the Internet.   Be sure to so they can be added to

About being a "tourist!"
Getting Away With Jim Bruner
gives you instant information at your finger tips.  Information that will help you become more than just another tourist.

"The traveler was active: he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, or experience. The tourist is passive: he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes sight-seeing"

Some tips on getting around this site
Here are a few examples of how to find something on this site. Perhaps you are planning of visiting Europe for the first time and you want information about passports. Just click on "General Information" under the Travel Directory heading. This will take you to a page with another "travel directory" and under that directory you will find "Passports and Visas." Click on that and you have just about all you will need to apply for your passport. If you want to take a vacation in Florida, just click on "North America," then on the "United States," and then on "Florida." Information about Holland? Click on "Europe," then on "The Netherlands."

Hopefully the above information will help you get around the site easily. And remember, this site is for you. I have tried to make it interesting and easy for you to find the information you need to have a nice vacation or holiday.
