Mature Folks Like Me...Folks 55 and older, along with their spouses, relatives or friends, or just a “significant other” that are at least 45, can take advantage of the Elderhostal program both here in America and overseas. Courses last from 2 to 4 weeks with a beginning cost of about $1,800 (This includes air fare, lodging, most meals, instruction, and admission fees.) that promise to really help you understand the area in which you are studying while enjoying g the area you are studying in. Interhostel, a part of the University of New Hampshire (6 Garrison Avenue, Durham, NH 03824) offers programs for persons 50 and older that are two weeks in length. Prices range from about $2000 to $4500 and include the courses, room and board, air fare, and ground transportation. Senior studies for people over 55, called ElderFolk courses, are available from the Folkways Institute (14600 SE Aldridge Road, Portland, OR 97236, 1-800-225-4666) that are specifically for individuals who enjoy in-the-field learning experiences in cultural or natural history. The courses last from about a week to almost a month and include lodging, land transportation, air fare, most meals, and lecture and museum fees at a cost of between about $3000 and $6000. Educational Tours For Everyone...The Smithsonian Institution offers some excellent tours with their Smithsonian Study Tours and Seminars (1100 Jefferson Dr., SW, MRC 702, Washington, DC 20560, 202/357-4700 or (fax) 202/633-9250 that include country tours, river cruises, city tours, ocean cruises, and much more including some seminars at Oxford in England. Earthwatch (680 Mt. Auburn St., Box 9014, Watertown, MA 02272, 1-800-776-0188) offers interesting tours that include search expeditions and archaeological excavations, biological and ecological research tours, and many more exciting opportunities. You do not need any special skills and you are actually a part of the “team” doing the research.
